Tax reform working already

Friend,

Welcome to your weekly update. As always, you can learn more about these and other legislative issues at my website: upton.house.gov.

Tax reform working already

As you know, at the end of 2017 our Tax Cuts & Jobs Act legislation was signed into law. As I’ve said before, this reform was long overdue; our businesses were falling behind global competitors, our local small businesses were stuck footing the bill, and folks were spending countless hours trying to navigate our broken tax system.

Good news: Our efforts are paying dividends already.

As a direct result of this bill, Fiat Chrysler just announced that they will be moving production of its Ram heavy-duty truck from Mexico to Michigan. Anyone from Michigan or the Midwest can understand that this is a big deal. After decades of jobs moving OUT of Michigan, we are seeing these jobs – and the economic growth that will come with them – coming back. This move alone is projected to add 2,500 jobs back to the Michigan economy. In addition, they will be giving one-time $2,000 bonuses to their 60,000 U.S. employees. This is a huge win for Michigan.

This announcement comes in the wake of a flood of U.S. companies announcing huge reinvestments in America. Also this week, Walmart – America’s largest employer – announced that they will be raising wages, providing bonuses, and improving benefits for their workforce. Next month, folks will see the direct benefits of this bill in their paychecks. It has been estimated that on average Michiganders will see more than $2,000 in take home pay. That’s money that can be used how you, not the government, see fit – whether that means saving for retirement or putting the money in your kid’s college fund, it’s yours to spend.

No excuses on finding a DACA fix

Yesterday, I sat down with WSBT 22 in South Bend to discuss the solutions that are being discussed on DACA.

As you know, the deadline to act to find a solution for DACA recipients is rapidly approaching. This is an issue that is close to my heart. These young people are American in every way but their official status. They grew up in our communities, attended our schools, worked in our economy, paid their taxes and served in our military. That is why last month I joined with a hand full of my colleagues in urging Speaker Ryan to take immediate action.

I look forward to continuing to work with all of my colleagues on this issue in finding a solution as soon as possible.

You can read that letter here.

One more thing ….

This week, I sat down with Michael Patrick Shiels on Michigan’s Big Show. We got a chance to discuss some really important issues like immigration reform, infrastructure investment, and the Line 5 pipeline which runs under the Straits of Mackinac.

You can listen here.

Have a great weekend and God bless,

-Fred
